THEFT OF GRAIN SEED AND CATTLE FEED
Unfortunately there was a theft of maize seed and cattle feed from a locked padlocked barn in the Hazelbury Bryan area at the beginning of April. This is an uncommon offence but obviously causes great concern to the farmer. Items stolen included over 200+ bags of maize seed and some cattle feed. This had a considerable financial loss to the farmer.
PLEASE if you see or hear of unusual sales of grain seed or cattle feed contact Dorset Police asap.
It is obviously not possible to turn your farm or stables into a Fort Knox. But below is a range of preention methods you could consider.
Physical Security & Access Control Secure Storage: Store feed and seeds in locked buildings, steel cages, or containers rather than leaving them in fields or barns. Gate Security: Padlock all field and yard gates, particularly those with road access, and reverse hinges to prevent them from being lifted off. Natural Barriers: Utilize hedges, ditches, or large obstacles like concrete boulders/tree stumps to block unauthorized vehicle access. Lighting: Install motion-sensor security lighting around storage sheds, fuel tanks, and yard entrances.
Surveillance & Technology CCTV and Cameras: Install CCTV or motion-activated cameras at key entry/exit points, focusing on fuel tanks and high-value storage. Alarm Systems: Use barn alarms, gateway alarms, or fence alarms to alert you when someone enters a secure area. GPS Tracking: Use GPS/RFID tracking devices for high-value equipment and monitor for movement outside of set times. Drones: Utilize drones for aerial surveillance to check remote areas of the farm. Inventory & Operational Management Regular Audits: Keep a strict, regular inventory of feed, seed, and fertilizer to quickly identify missing items. Mark Property: Mark tools, machinery, and equipment with your postcode, using forensic marking systems like SmartWater or Selecta DNA. Field Management: Avoid leaving fertilizer or feed in the field overnight; move it from high-risk locations, especially those near roads. Community & Reporting Join Our Rural Farm Watch: Participate in local Farm Watch or WhatsApp groups to share information on suspicious vehicles or people with neighbours and Dorset Police. Reporting: Report all suspicious activity—including "daylight scouting" by unfamiliar people—to the police immediately. Supplier Vigilance: Use trusted, reputable suppliers. | ||
